Myth # 2 – 100 calories from ice cream is same as 100 calories from a serving of fruit
Calorie count is the amount of energy contained in a given food.
This does not mean that different foods with equal amount of calories will have the same effects on your weight.
Research has shown that for the same number of calories in a given food, individuals who consume ultra-processed foods (for example those containing margarine, refined sugar, white flour, added salt etc) tend to overeat and gain more weight as compared with those individuals who eat unprocessed foods (like fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds etc).
Different categories of foods go through different metabolic pathways in the body and can have significantly different effects on hunger and the hormones that influence your body weight.
For example,100 calories from 1 slice of white bread is not the same as 100 calories from fruits or vegetables.
This is because calories from nutrient rich foods like fiber containing unprocessed carbohydrates, healthy fats, plant based and lean animal protein sources can help you feel fuller for longer time, reduce appetite, increase metabolism, and decrease food cravings compared to calories from refined foods, such as candy or white bread, which lack fiber.
It is therefore recommended that rather than only counting calories, importance should be given to the quality of food. Your focus should be on including appropriate portions of high quality, unrefined wholesome foods in your diet and avoiding low quality refined and processed foods.
